Beekeeping Short Course for Beginners

HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT KEEPING BEES ???

The Tidewater Beekeepers Association is holding a Beekeeping Short Course for Beginners in 2009

This course is designed to introduce potential beekeepers to the fundamentals of beekeeping through both classroom education and hands-on training in the bee yard, weather permitting.  Local beekeepers will be available at all times to answer your questions about getting started with this fascinating hobby.  

 

Each new beekeeper registration includes an entry to win a complete hive with bees!

  • 7:30 - 8:00 p.m.             Welcome and review of syllabus by Fred Hafer
  • 8:00 - 9:00 p.m.             Selecting a bee yard location & the basic components of a beehive by Tony Bird

  • 9:00 p.m.                        Question and answers.

  • 9:45 - 10:15 a.m.          Equipment assembly & maintenance by Fred Hafer
  • 10:15 - 11:00 a.m.        Honeybee history Dr. Dan Margolies
  • 11:00 - Noon                 Bee biology by Keith Tignor, State Apiarist
  • Noon - 1:00 p.m.           Lunch break - Lunch snacks provided by members of the Tidewater Beekeepers Association
  • 1:00 - 1:45 p.m.            Honeybee diseases and pests by Dr. Rick Fell
  • 2:00 - 2:30 p.m.            Treatment of diseases and pests by Dr. Rick Fell
  • 2:45 - 3:15 p.m.            Question and answers
  • 3:15 - 3:45 p.m.            Robbing the hive and living to tell about it by Art Halstead, Master Beekeeper
  • 4:00 p.m.                       Hiving of package bees (weather permitting)

 Cost:

  • Members of the Virginia State Beekeepers Association (VSBA) attending the course without receiving a workbook - $5.00

  • VSBA members attending the short course & receiving the course workbook - $10.00

  • Non-VSBA members - $30.00 (includes workbook) or - $35.00 (includes Tidewater Beekeepers Association & VSBA membership as well as workbook)

The short course will be held in the Science Auditorium of Blocker Hall on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan College in Norfolk, Virginia.  Click here for directions to the college.  Click here for a map of campus.  Upon entering the campus, stop at the guardhouse and tell the guards that you are attending the TBA Beekeeping Short Course for Beginners.  The back parking lot has been closed, so attendees should take a right after the guard house and drive up the central drive and park. Follow the signs into the building for registration in the atrium.
